One of the
best treatments for hotspots is witch hazel, available in the
first aid section of the pharmacy (usually near the alcohol).
Applying witch hazel 2 to 4 times daily usually does a great job
of drying up the hot spots. (Mixed 50:50 with vinegar it makes a
great ear wash too).
Sometimes it
is helpful to put a cortisone cream on the hotspot after the
witch hazel to further reduce inflammation and itching.
Depending on
the location of the hotspot, an Elizabethan collar or foot wraps
can reduce the self-mutilation.
Finally, oral
administration of human antihistamines such as Benadryl can help
for their anti-itch and sedation qualities.
